My First Encounter with Diabetes and Hypertension!

It was way back in October 2014 when I was 31 years, me and my wife we both decided to extend our family and visited a gynecologist, and she suggested us to undergo regular laboratory tests. When test results came back everything were in the normal range except my blood sugar which was in the range of 300 mg/dL and I was diagnosed with diabetes mellitus type 2.

Nevertheless, after 15 days I was diagnosed again with high blood pressure, it was in the range of 180/100 to 200/100 in all the five sphygmomanometer measurements. Hypertension is rightly called as "silent disease."  I never had any symptoms or signs of the same though I have a family history of the hypertension and my mother was the victim of the same.

After confirmation of above two dreadful disorders, I was very hesitant to start with the oral medications prescribed by the physicians because of their side effects. Doctors were trying their best to make me understand about the importance of starting oral medications without any delay which will prevent damaging of my internal organs like heart, kidneys, and eyes, etc.

Meanwhile, my wife was doing well during her third trimester. We were in fact very happy to know that soon we will be parenting a baby. On the day of baby shower at Cloudnine Hospital, Bangalore, my wife was asked whether she is hoping for a baby boy or girl, she responded “all I really hope for is a healthy baby!” We were showered with hell lot of wishes and compliments.

On the other side of my mind, the fear of Diabetes and Hypertension were spreading cloud on our's happiness. I was also diabetic and obese like 62 million other Indians.

I had a tough time to keep my blood sugars range in the controlled range despite restricting myself from intake of sweet products. I started using sugar free tablets in my tea. On those days my weight was also on the higher side, I was 95 kilograms, so I started going to gym. Basically, I'm foodie kind of guy and it was a very difficult situation for me to restrict my diet. Moreover, I was still not convinced to start with the oral anti-diabetic drugs in spite of several urge from my doctor. I made my mind not to start with the allopathy medicines and I started with strict diet control and gymming. Of late, I started facing issues with my vision and I was prescribed spectacles by ophthalmologist.

In today's world, hypertension is one of the most common lifestyle disease today which needs a lifetime attention. Hypertension is likely to end up being an epidemic in the near future, and approximately one-third of our population will suffer from it by 2020, as per one of the senior practitioner in Bangalore. One in three Indians has hypertension and even kids can also be victims of high blood pressure. High blood pressure responds to diet, sleep, exercise, work, and stress quite sensitively. Optimistic attitude towards lifestyle changes serves as a good prevention. Hypertension is a global health problem which kills nearly 9 million people in the world every year according to WHO, 2013.

After doing several blood tests and maintaining logs of blood pressure readings in the last three months, I finally decided to go ahead with oral anti-hypertensive and anti-diabetic agents. It's been 3 years now since I'm on those oral medications. I am maintaining diet, sleep, exercise, work. I have a lost quite a bit of weight and I look slimmer than before.

People says high blood pressure and diabetes are conditions brought about by life style. If you change the life style, those conditions will leave. It's always good to have medication to go on for a period of time to control these disorders.

Me and my wife, we are happily parenting our son who is 2.7 years now and he is going to start his Montessori soon. Fortunately, after following strict diet and regular exercises for 1 year which helped me to reduce approximately 10 kg weight and I'm not a diabetic or hypersensitive now. ☺☺
